Modern dance
More than likely, this will be the last photo I post until after the new year — I’ve been shooting a ton of color and slide film since the snow started to fall, and my favorite lab is closed for the holidays in the meantime.
I’ll keep lurking until I have something original to post again. You all are A+ party people, so I know I won’t have to say it, but enjoy yourselves! See you after the break.

A year of photographs.

These are some of my personal favorite photographs from throughout the year. 2009 was a crazy year — it began on the vacant streets of East Baltimore, took me to the rubble-strewn desert of Eastern Afghanistan, and back again. This was the year Patrick Joust taught me how to develop black and white film in his midtown apartment bathroom.

This year, I learned what fear was on a West Baltimore corner. I learned it again, and again, and again with each subsequent mortar attack on the Kuh-E Charikar valley floor. A countless number of people from every walk of life have entered my life in one way or another, and I’m thankful each day for the influence and inspiration they give me each and every time I lift the camera to my eye.

Here’s looking forward to whatever comes next.

“The Land of Pleasant Living,” my second book of photographs, is due out early 2010.
I’ll keep you posted.

I truly appreciate the kind words. Thanks for following along with this crazy adventure.

I hiked six miles today to shoot the snow after the majority of the whiteout was over. I inevitably made my way into Oldtown, as it’s been one of those places that’s been on my mind a lot lately. I was leaning against this brick wall in a little offshoot alley from the main strip, and was focusing in on some tags when this guy came walking by, tripping his way through the two feet of snow. He looked to his left and saw me, and jumped straight up into the air. I don’t think he was expecting a six-foot-four white dude in a camouflage parka and a bomber hat taking pictures in this part of town with a camera older than the photographer using it.
He was cool about it. We both laughed, we wished each other a merry Christmas, and we slipped and slid off on our own separate ways.
